I recently learned that “walipini” is a term derived from South America, and it means “a place of warmth.” These structures are popular in the northern climates which get extreme cold in the wintertime. The walipini creates a warm and protected growing environment for plants with less heat.

A walipini greenhouse is typically built into the ground, with the floor and walls dug into a hill or slope to take advantage of the insulating properties of the soil. This design makes the structure very energy efficient to help regulate the temperature inside the greenhouse, which can be an important factor in ensuring the success of crop production. The roof of the walipini is covered with a translucent greenhouse material to provide sunlight for photosynthesis and heat to the structure.

Builders like to use Solexx as part of their walipini design due to the diffuse light and insulation. Between the dense dirt that makes up most of the walipini side walls and the insulating properties of Solexx, the greenhouse provides a warm and protected growing environment for plants, and is also very energy-efficient.
